3 Lectures left, but who is counting….

March 5th, 2010

I’M COUNTING! I’ve been buried this term. Having a TA certainly helped me dig out, and will help with the end of term grading.

There’s only a week between Spring and Winter term and of course I’ve got a lot of ground to cover. I’m going to be doing a lot of edits to my server admin class and I’m teaching a brand new class, without a book. A text book really help provide some structure and flow to a course. It saves a heck of a lot of time in course development. I’m hoping to get at least 3 weeks worth of materials together before the start of the class. Don’t want to start behind the 8-ball as usual.

Overall, I wasn’t happy with the Winter Term.  I didn’t feel as though any of my three classes went as smooth as they could have. The Active Directory class was a train wreck! Book issues out the waazu! That’s what lead to horrible backlog of grading.

And so I’ve basically been keeping it together, but barely.

Oh and the Linux class. I’ve learned stuff. But not nearly as much as I wanted to. The class was simply added to the mess that is my life and shuffled around to make room for everything.

Know Your Limits

February 14th, 2010

I push myself hard ever day to be “caught up”, to be GREAT at everything I do, or attempt to do. Talk about unrealistic expectations. Well I finally had to call for help. The term is half over and I’m buried in it! With two classes that are new to me and one class I’ve taught more than a few times I’ve got a lot going on. It’s struggle to stay even or just a bit behind.

So I requested a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) and my request was approved. By the afternoon on Friday, I had help. Met with the TA, a former student on Saturday to make sure he had access to the course and had his marching orders. Once that was done I was able to focus on my biggest challenge.

One of my new courses isn’t going nearly as smoothly as I would have liked. The book is a wreck! I picked the book because in the past they have worked well, MS Press Cert books by the way. Not so much this time. My attention to details has been…. Blah! So that’s lead to a chaotic first 5 weeks.

But, things are changing. Cause I’m going to make them change. The TA will free me up to get this course under control. That’s my number 1 priority.

So of course that hasn’t left me much time for anything else.

Like Miniatures and Roleplaying. I had to put two of my browser games into vacation mode.

I’m working on a ShadowRun Play-by-Email (PBeM) game with Ralph. I’ve got the materials and sent out the first turn but that’s been about it.

My FSA Fleets have stalled or grinded to a halt. Which totally sucks. Need to get a game scheduled and see if that doesn’t move me a long.

Cyn is just as busy as I am, which means we’ve resorted to Thursday Morning Date Mornings. Getting in quality time when we can.

Back to P90X

January 25th, 2010

So I know I need to stay physically active, I’m not a young man any more and the highblood pressure could evolve into a problem if i don’t stay active.

That’s pretty easy to understand, but theory and practice are two different things.

Life is certainly hectic around the Guild Hall, but that’s no real excuse.

SO! I started back working out, nothing major 20-30 minutes a day, Wednesday thru Monday. I take Tuesdays off. I’m working on building my stamina up so I can make it through entire P90X workouts. It’ll happen, hoping to stick with it for the entire 90 days this time around. the last few attempts I’ve gone about a month, not bad by any stretch.

saying all that…. I’M SORE!

GenCon Bound!

January 25th, 2010

On Sunday I pre-registered for my GenCon Badge! It’s official – I’m on ma way!

Returned to the WarMachine table on Friday for the release of MKII. I enjoyed it. Played one new opponent, one opponent I hadn’t played in forever and one new opponent. Dice were even keel – until the last match of course! They totally failed me! I was 2 wins – 0 losses going into that match. I was in the lead for the faction coin (the prize for having the best record in your faction at the end of the event).

However there was another Khador player (my faction) that was 2 and 0 thanks to a bye. :( In the end I took the coin and probably 3rd place overall. We didn’t go 4 rounds as planned, not surprising at all.  There were 15 players, a decent mix of factions.

I need time to digest the full list of rule changes and play more to see if I’m sold 100% on the “upgrade”

Other games, not making a whole lot of progress, I’m busy as all hell!

 The list:

  • Prepare to run the ShadowRun PBeM starting Feb 1.
  • A finish reading Anima Tactics Rulebook
  • Play more Anima Tactics
  • Paint the Terran Fleet for Firestorm Armada (FSA)
  • Finish FSA rulebook
  • Play FSA
  • WarMachine MKII rule book

Not to bad – I guess!

Finally!

The Anima Tactics Rulebook – IN HAND!

It took a long time for the book to get published and even longer for me to get one into my hands, but I’d have to say it was worth it. Beautiful book!

I’m most hyped about the fluff, the background on the world and on the characters. The updated, clairfied rules are a bonus. Now I’ve just got to get people to play……

Here’s a shot of the cover:

I’M GOING TO GENCON! (August 5 – 8, 2010)

January 13th, 2010

Found here: http://www.gencon.com/2010/indy/default.aspx

I’m headed to GenCon with my Adam and Andrew – this’ll be interesting.

So let the bloggin begin…..

What seems like forever ago, I worked for a travel agency doing IT. All kinds of IT, from network, server admin to DBA. I made some good connections.

It’s a good thing, travel websites make me weep! A lot! I don’t have patience to wade through it. That right, I can bring a server online, troubleshot with a user, but CANNOT muster mojo required to operate a travel website. I’ve tried!

So when I want to travel I call up Beth:

I just tell her what I want to do and BLAM! Beth has taken care of three vacations and getting my parents from Philly to Oregon and back. Always good tymes. And knowing someone can help to resolve issues quickly, nothing better. I’m sure she’s gotten good press on this blog before.

Adam has been to GenCon before so he’s the operations manager of the expedition. He picked out the hotel and laid out our travel dates. I passed the info along to Beth and she’s on it.

So the next thing is registration for the convention itself, January 24th!

Don’t take it Personal, you can’t please everyone.

January 12th, 2010

The break between terms was good. I managed to relax a little, however I spent a decent amount of time getting ready for the Winter term. Break flew by and the first week of term didn’t stick around very long either. Here I am in Week 2 already.

I’m teaching two new classes, one old class and taking yet another class. The class I’m taking is a Linux Admin class. There’s class in the future that will require Linux skillz, unfortunately I don’t have any! Being a student in a class has allowed me to see how another instructor approaches things. This is a good thing.

One of the new classes I’ve never taught before, it’s the client operating system class. I’ve stepped into a shell from another instructor and I’m going with the flow. This also allows me to see how another instructor does business.

Both classes are giving me tons of ideas on changes I can make to my class to improve the overall experience for my students. I know that teaching is a never ending process, but I’d like to get closer to my ideal class.

I think one of the biggest things I have to adjust to as a full time instructor is the big picture. I’m now part of the big picture and directing how my dept handles the big picture. The big picture includes  what approach we take in the classroom, how we interact with other depts, scheduling, and the list goes on. It’s overwhelming at times.

So where does it the title come from. It comes from someone stating that I something I covered in class was BS.

WOW! That kinda hurt! I would think that I’ve never tried to BS anyone. And if I’m saying something it valid. Now if you don’t agree with me, fine. But don’t discount my information to make your own seem important. I hope who ever said it finds no value in my course and drops it! But I’ve got to let it go. I can’t spend the time wondering about that one student that thinks I’m full of it. I’ve got to keep going doing what I do, If I’m not doing something right the people in charge will hear about it.

So back to the front of the class I go.

I did a Bad thing……

December 19th, 2009

I picked up another bloody minis game.  I’m not sure what in heaven’s name I was thinking. A total break down of impulse control.

The new game – Space Ships! The game is Firestorm Armada by Spartan Games. http://www.spartangames.co.uk/firestorm_armada.htm

I picked up two Fleets: Terran Empire & Sorylian Collective

I’ve started reading the rule book but haven’t gotten far beyond the fluff (background story). The background is kinda weak. Not a lot of detail on the races and no pictures. Of course that got me thinking about writing some myself. It’s been a long time since a game moved me to do some writing about the game itself. I did some with WarMachine a while back.

With Winter Term closing in quick, I realistically have NO idea when I’ll actually play.

The ships are cool! I’ve got high hopes for getting space terrain created. The plan is to airbrush the ships & the terrain. The be fully painted by the first game. Hey! Anything is possible!

So that of course leads to thinking about the game list…… (in no specific order)

FireStorm Armada – New game, ships are assembled, need to get through the rule book, make some terrain, and finally PLAY A GAME!

Anima Tactics – Still love this game every time I play it. Looking forward to the rulebook. Probably just because I’ve waited so long. Don’t see any official events on the horizon, but maybe some demos and some open play.

AE-WWII – Good game, really don’t get to play it that often, but I enjoy when I do. I picked up the latest expansion book. I’d like to read the first book and expansion book for my next game.

Malifaux – Finished up a league recently and also got in a multi-player. Still working to master the details of the game and my own figures. Mechanics are tight and it’s a fun game. I’ve resisted the urge to go overboard and pick anything outside of what I’ve already got.

WarMachine/Hordes – This is a tough one.  BB King may have said it best, “The Thrill is Gone” The game has grown massive since I started. There were a lot of figures, with abilities that could be abused and made the game un-fun, totally un-fun.

It seemed like every game you played, a figure did something that left you speechless, and when you caught your breath you replied, “That figure does what!”

So the makers of WarMachine Hordes have decided to re-mix the game. They are changing rules & figures. They decided to try something, different. A field test. They release the materials for the update to give players a chance to play with the changes and post suggestions, observations and comments.  I would say if I was totally into the game, it’d be neat to play and test these things. But I’m not motivated to play and test out the new things and the changes.

So I’m watching, reading the comments. Some good info, but nothing to move me. The game doesn’t call to me.

NOW the big question, the MK II rulebook releases in January & the follow up Forces of Khador Book. I’m debating on if I’ll pick them up. I’m totally undecided. Given my affinity to shinny new books, I’m sure that could change. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Legends of the Old West – Not playing much of this game as the group hasn’t been able to meet in a few months. We’re going to be starting the campaign over from scratch at our next meeting.

Warlord Card Game – This is a fun quick game. I’ve got four decks which is more than enough to just play and to teach others how to play. No new investment required.

There’s probably a game I’m missing, but that’s the bulk of it.

I’m looking to start a Play By Email (PBeM) Shadowrun game. I’ve got the books and started reading them. That’ll pick up sometime in January.

Thining Technology

November 28th, 2009

This is the name of my new blog, found here: http://robertsguild.com/technology/

I opted to seperate the blogs as this blog has become more personal than work and tech related. I could barely update one, so we’ll see how maintaining two goes……

The plan is to have a regular schedule for updating the tech blog with a series of topics laid out in advance.

Getting a blog update has been on the list of things to do for a loooooong time.

November 11th, 2009

Full time teaching is a total change of altitude, pace, everything else.

Teaching is NOT a 9 – 5 gig, not even close. And its no where near 40 hours a week. In the modern age of instant communication and always connected there are times where it feels like its 24-7. I’ve been working hard to keep up, getting ahead is a neat concept, but not something I expect to happen – EVER!

I’m starting to look at ways to improve my courses. The only problem is getting the time to make it happen. Its coming……

Also looking at my return to Cert Study. I’m going to need to develop ways to stay current. Releases of operating systems and the new hotness in networking technology. With that, I’m looking at 70-640 as my return cert. Shouldn’t be too hard to get up to speed on, it’s Active Directory. Which now focuses on users, groups, computers, and a few other subjects I’m pretty familiar with. I passed the 2003 AD test with variable ease.

Also, I’ve decided to split my blog. I originally started this blog as a tech/cert blog. The focused has changed as Cert/tech stuff has fallen off, but my non-eventful, unexciting life has taken up much of the posts. Considering how long it took for me to post this update….. We’ll see when that happens.

Besides getting “acquainted” with full time teaching, what have I been up too?

Tabletop Gaming of course! Malifaux is pretty much it. It’s started to gain some momentum locally. Of course I have everything for the game painted on commission. Just easier than lying to myself trying to convince myself I’m going paint. I’ve enjoyed the game, using a deck of cards vs. dice has been interesting. Luck is still luck and I don’t have a lot when it comes to games.

Painting, hasn’t happened much at all. Motivation and momentum don’t generally last very long. I’ve got 5 figures left to paint to be fully painted with Anima Tactics! Not that hard. All 5 are started, but forward progress has been…. Blah!

Commentary on Anima Tactics – I wouldn’t say the game is dead. My heart still beats for the game, but I don’t the companies involved in the game have done enough to ensure its survival in a touch, very touch gaming market. The rulebook has been a bone of contention for some time. Some people can’t/won’t see a game as “legitimate” without a rule book. I’ve enjoyed the game everything I’ve played regardless of have an actual rulebook. It’s coming, and I’ll buy it when it shows up, but I think the damage is done.

If you asked my opinion, good thing this is my blog and I can give my opinion without being asked :) ….

The lack of a formal release schedule  makes the game seems low budget. Information about releases comes from people on the forums and usually its someone in Europe. Figures just appear in the Cipher Studios webstore or someone on the forums saying, “I picked X figure locally today”.

A lot of people are loyal to the store they play in and prefer to buy from that store. Hard to tell the store owner to order something if you don’t when it’ll be available.

I love the game play, the figs, the concept, and hate watching a good game go down into obscurity, or should I say watching the game linger in obscurity.

Commentary on Privateer Press (Hordes and WarMachine) – Still very popular with a very active community. BUT as long as they are in transition It’d be hard to get back to it. Not only that. But, there are cheaper games. I can have a full army painted for other games at the cost of a single unit (10 figs) or a single figure for that matter. And my new non-painting status makes that a major hurdle. I can deal with playing with unpainted figs. Maybe after the rules and figure update I’ll get back to it. But the longer I spend playing other games, the harder it is to show PP some love.

 AE-WWII – just not playing.

I put some time into updating my 25th Anniversary Joe case. It’s almost done, then I’ll get some pictures posted. I’m happy with the changes. I added 10+ figs to the case, both Cobra and Joes, which sparked the case remix.

I have no idea what I’m going to do with my “vintage case” It needs some attention.

 What else is there?

Oh for homeowners, an energy audit for the Energy Trust of Oregon. It’s Free if you use PGE for heat or natural gas. They also provided me with list of contracts to make the improvements they recommended. In this case, insulation. Insulation in the attic and the crawl space. Noticed a difference almost automatically. But that also led to a two-zone split pump heating/cooling system. I LOVE IT!

Climate control in the house. Talk about good tymes!

The contractor that did the work: Home Energy Life Performance Group  – (503) 244-8232

P90X – great system, but I didn’t have what it took to stay with it. I can do the workouts no problem. Ok some problem, but not a lot. I just couldn’t nail down the eating. And without that peace the rest is worthless. You won’t see the results you want. Another issue could have been I didn’t have goals in mind. Or even a single goal. I was just doing it. And that made motivation hard to come by.

I know I’ll revisit it, just have to figure out a better plan of attack.

Wow, I guess that’s what happens when you go almost a month without an update.
